Chesapeake Bay

As the largest estuary in America, The Chesapeake Bay offers endless sailing options, making it a sailor's paradise.

Annapolis, Maryland, a charming, historic port city and the state capitol, is known as "The Sailing Capital of the US" because of its location on the Chesapeake Bay. "The Bay," as the locals call it, nearly splits the state of Maryland in half, between the western and eastern shores. It is approximately 200 miles long from its northern headwaters in the Susquehanna River to its outlet in the Atlantic Ocean. The Bay measures 2.8 miles wide at its narrowest and 30 miles at its widest, with 11,684 stunning miles of shoreline.

There are stately homes, historical buildings, abundant natural habitat and other beautiful sites to view on the Bay, including the stunning 4+ mile long Bay Bridge that connects Maryland's western and eastern shores. The Bay is home to the famous Blue Crab, known for its sweet, delicious flavor. In addition to the Blue Crab, there are over 300 species of marine life, including Rockfish (striped bass), delectable varieties of the Eastern Oyster, and the Atlantic Horseshoe Crab. Among the diverse array of Bay area birds you may see, are Ospreys, Great Blue Herons, and Bald Eagles.
